Forbes’ “Fab 40: The World's Most Valuable Sports Brands” list was published a few days ago, and with it a surprise to find Tiger Woods on top of the list despite the scandal he has faced, and the fact that he is out of the top 50 golf players after 15 years of being part of the sport’s elite. Although he has faced a $27 million fall, his brand is still worth $29 million more than that of the best tennis player of all time, Roger Federer. In the world of tennis, and all sports, having the best endorsement portfolio with leading brands in the market.
In a different list published, also, by Forbes Roger Federer is ranked 25 in the “World’s Most Powerful Celebrities”, having the top one in Press Rank. He is followed by probably his greatest rival, the man who has beat him more than twice the number of times in which he has lost against him, Rafael Nadal. A different game, personality, way of perceiving the sport, relationship to the press, nationality, culture, language, and image, are some of the things separate this two great players who have been the main characters of tennis’s history since 2005. A thing they have in common, their main sponsor, Nike. The leading brand of the market has been dressing these key figures in the world of today’s sports, and therefor will remain in everyone’s memory of those who follow the sport.
Although above in the Press Rank of the last mentioned list, Tiger Woods is also above Roger Federer when measuring the power of celebrities. This time Woods is number 6. With 35 years of age, he is having a hard time returning to the top, but continues to hold a great amount of responsibility and this has not changed his celebrity status and the power that comes with it. He actually is the first athlete in the list as well as the highest paid with $75 million. But, Tiger is also a member of the Nike’s family, and considered by many, Nike’s Golf. Being with him that Nike opened its market to Golf, it was also one of the two brands that did not cancel his endorsement deals and stood by him through the scandal and after that.
